What's Wrong?

Barbara Burgess, Psychic Medium

Did you grow up, like me, in a household where everyone seemed to be looking for your faults or what you were doing wrong?

"Why are you sitting down, get up and do something".

"Close your mouth - are you catching flies".

"Why did you not shut the gate, wash the dishes, clean the house, hoover up, feed the cats, rabbits and dogs".

And so on.

And from the teachers -

"Why did you not get ten out of ten for your maths?'

"If you can get eight out of ten then why can't you get ten out of ten?"

"Why are there so many spelling mistakes in the message on the blackboard - 'I hayte the teecher?'  (I got the cane for that!)

And so on - everyone just looking to trip you up and find out what you have done wrong.

Wayne Dyer has a fantastic quote ~

“Catch your children doing something right instead of doing something wrong. Remind them of their greatness on a daily basis.”

You may also have grown up with family jokes and old wives tales -

'Don't let your baby yawn because it will get lock jaw'.

'"Don't look at the moon through glass'.

'Turn your money over at the beginning of the month'.

One of my mother's 'jokes' that stuck with me for many years was -

'Didn't your mother teach you how to hang the washing out properly?'

Actually, at school, we had a lesson on how to do washing!

We had to bring a handkerchief to school - wash it - hang it out on the school line - wait until it was dry - and then iron it.  We were taught the correct way to do this task.

Obviously there is a right way to do something and there is a wrong way to do something.

However, who decided, in the very first instance, which was the right way and which was the wrong way?

So, when my elder daughter became old enough to help me hang the washing on the line, I repeated what my mother had said to me -

'Didn't your mother ever tell you the correct way to hang the washing on the line?'

Apparently socks should be hung from the toe end and not from the top end!

Then my daughter replied - "Mother, the washing will dry whichever way you hang it on the line".

Do you know what, I bless my daughter for that eurika moment!  It just had not occurred to me that the washing would dry no matter which way it was hung out on the line!  I had spent years trying to perfect my 'hanging of the washing on the line' routine!  It had developed into OCD at times.

I was now free!  I was free and could hang the washing any which way I wanted to!  Wow!

There are many instances where we copy our parents, teachers, friends, the media and so forth, thinking that what 'they' are doing is the right way and what we are doing, therefore, must be the wrong way.

Obviously, if you drive the wrong way down a dual carriageway then you are in trouble.  But is there a right way to eat your dinner, or a right way to get dressed or a right way to feed the cat or walk the dog?

Free yourself and do it YOUR way now.

Stop criticising you.

Stop 'shoulding on yourself' as my friend Patricia Crane says.

And take a leaf out of Wayne Dyers book and

“Catch your children doing something right instead of doing something wrong. Remind them of their greatness on a daily basis.”

Remind yourself  of YOUR greatness as well.

Where Poppies Grow

Barbara Burgess, Psychic Medium

Barbara Burgess, Psychic Medium

The poppy or field poppy is an annual plant.  This means it flowers each year and generally between about May to August.  It disburses its seeds in the wind and these seeds can lie dormant in the ground for a very long time. If the ground is then disturbed around  the early spring the seeds will germinate and the poppy flowers will grow.

This is what happened to the poppies and the land at Flanders.  The land was disturbed by the shells and fighting.   Then in the following warm spring the poppies grew.

Some time ago now, near me men were digging up the pavement by the side of the road in order to lay a new path that would eventually join two small villages.  Shortly after the pavements were completed beautiful poppies began to grow on the verges.  A very pretty site indeed.

The poppies I have photographed below grow at the side of a potato field.  Sometimes the field has a wheat or barley crop in it and then the whole field is full of poppies, from black, through different shades of red, to pink.

Cry Wolf

Barbara Burgess, Psychic Medium

After reading the books by Anthony William, Medical Medium, we have chosen to drink bottled water.  Tap water is full of unpleasant things such as chlorine and fluoride.  Filtered water can have all the minerals filtered out of it and so we drink bottled water.

Recently, after shopping we were loading the car up with the bottles and I suggested to my husband, Richard to lay them down flat as they can fall over and squash the food bags.

He began pushing the large packs of bottles.

I suggested to him that pushing was not a good idea and that I was told always to pull an object and not push it.

This brought to memory a friend of mine from school.  He loved acting the clown.  He would fall about, just like Norman Wisdom and cry out as if he were in pain or in agony.  He would even writhe about on the floor sometimes and we often wondered if he were crying wolf or not.

I met him some years later, when he was in his thirties and asked how he was and he told me he had been very ill with a punctured lung.

He said that he worked in a builders yard and was pushing some very heavy planks along a shelving when he cried out in agony and fell writhing to the floor.

No-one took any notice of him until he began turning blue and then they called for an ambulance. Apparently he had pushed so hard he had ruptured one of his lungs.

He said the doctors told him never to push a heavy object but always to pull it.

He did see the funny side of what had happened and could understand why none of his work colleagues came to his aid.   He told me he had stopped 'acting the fool' now, which, in some ways,  was probably a very good idea!

Rare Water Otter

Barbara Burgess Psychic Medium

Barbara Burgess Psychic Medium

There is a garden, somewhere in Eastbourne, Sussex, that has funny and strange things in it.  The garden is open to the public.  I went there many times as a child.

Somewhere in that strange garden is a little shed and on the door to the shed is a sign - 'Rare Water Otter' - once  inside you find what is depicted in the image above.

I was chatting to my brother the other day over old memories and he reminded me of someone my father knew.  We knew this man as 'Taffy'.  He came to visit my dad on his bicycle.  He was extremely tall.  I recall that if he stood in a doorway you could only see up to his neck.  You could not see his head at all.  A very tall man indeed.

My dad worked with Taffy at Luton Airport.  They were both draughtsmen there.  Taffy was also a cartoonist.  Now that my memory has been jogged I do vaguely remember seeing some of the cartoons Taffy drew.  Maybe Taffy brought them to show my dad or maybe my dad brought some home from work.

Taffy had been asked, by his boss, to draw a sealing washer.  What Taffy drew was someone washing a ceiling.  He handed this cartoon to his boss.  I am sure his boss had just as good a sense of humour as Taffy did.  My sense of humour.

Up, Up and Away

Have you ever been up in a glider?

Or, better still, can you fly one?

I was brought up around gliders.  My dad used to build them, repair them and do C of A's (Certificate of Airworthiness) on them, at London Gliding Club.

My dad always made model airplanes and gliders as he was growing up.  Then, at the end of the second world war he was sent to Germany to repatriate German families.

He actually found several families living in a cow shed as their houses had been requisitioned by the U K forces.  They were all quite poorly with scabies and the like and my dad helped them get better, although this was not his job.

It was one of these men that introduced my dad to gliders and flying.  I think he had done some flying before but this German officer was a very good pilot and taught my dad much about flying.

My dad loved flying and would go up in a glider at any opportunity.  He could do aerobatics and loop the loops.

He was also very skilled at mending gliders and would re-build many that other people thought were a write off.

One particular glider that he repaired, he did a small modification to the body, and this then won a competition against other gliders of the same make. The owner asked my dad what he had done to the glider as it flew so beautifully fast after the repair! I doubt very much if this type of thing could happen today. In those days, anyway gliders were made of wood and paper!

My dad would feel things with his hands and would also run his eyes down a wing or fuselage to see or feel how streamlined the aircraft was.

My brother took to flying and I watched him on his first solo flight and the cable broke!  Luckily he was not that high off the ground and he had room to land.

When I was sixteen I had the opportunity to go up in one of these sailplanes.

I can tell you that it was the most horrendous thing I have ever done!

I knew all about gliders as I helped to get them from the hangers and I was even allowed to hold the wing before take off.

However I did not have a clue as to what flying was like!

I sat next to the pilot and we were having a winch launch.

I think you go up at about 60mph at an angle of 40 degrees.  This, in itself, I was not expecting.

At the 'top' when you reach the correct height or the height the cable will stretch to, the pilot ejects the cable.

In my case the glider's nose dipped at this point and my stomach turned over and over and over and just about left my body behind!

My father, later on, told me that the nose should not have dipped if the pilot had done it properly.

By this time I was even more than petrified.  I just wanted to get back down on the ground.

The glider then did a few circuits of the air field while the pilot kept saying how lovely it was.  I may have nodded, trying not to show my fear.  I cannot remember now.

Then we did a very low glide over Dunstable Downs.  The glider appeared to be going too low and too fast for my liking.  The pilot told me to look at all the people sunbathing.  I think I did but my mind was a complete blur at that time!

Then we came in to land.

On Classic FM,  the other day, the broadcaster asked people to text in what was their happiest moment.  Well I think the glider landing and getting my feet back on tera firmir that day was one of the happiest moments of my life.

Flying in gliders is  not for me.
